The IP Core and edge network are based on IP over fiber, IP over SDH mobile technologies and MPLS technology for traffic control and building VPN networks relying on IP protocol.

The topology of the network is:

• an 622 Mbps optical ring with three core routers (Cisco 12008 GSR) in Skopje, Stip and Ohrid. The optics was previously laid to connect SDH telephone switches.
   
• Linked to the optical ring are nine large POP (Point of Presence) routers. They are connected to the ring through Packet-over-SONET (POS) SMT-1 links operating over existing 155 Mbps SDH connections.
   
• Connected to these routers over 2 Mbps links are 10 terminal small-pop routers (Cisco 3600).

Cisco DTP technology implemented in the project offers a packet optimized transport solution combining IP routing flexibility with optical ring flexibility

Network management is of great importance to MT, which is why they use Cisco??™s MPLS VPN Solution Center Software. MT also uses various software packages for network management such as Cisco Works2000.

The basic role of MT network management is collecting data using NetFlow software which collect data and forward it to the central working station for user account processing (analysis). Web support, application hosting and voice and video over IP are upcoming MT services that will significantly contribute to development of electronic business in Macedonia.

The following services are available through this network:

• Regular Internet access in all of Macedonia through leased lines and Dial-up.
   
• Virtual Private Networks based in IP protocol (through leased linesor dial-up) of special interest to business owners in Macedonia.
   
• Wholesale Dial-up services (Carrier-to-Carrier)

The most interesting e-business service in banking and other financial domains is available in IP VPN networks. The service offers secure and reliable links through public network infrastructure. Since the network is public-owned and shared by many users, service costs are lower compared to ones own private network expenses (e.g. for point-to-point leased lines).

Companies can utilize the Intranet to connect remote offices (i.e. bank branches) into a virtual private network, unconstrained to using a single shared address space. Extranet is convenient for linking different companies and data distribution.

Henceforth through it's cooperation with Pexim Solutions and Cisco, MT have acquired the most powerful IP optimized infrastructure in South East Europe and evolved into a regional leader in modern technologies.
